"Maggie, Eliza, and Tricia Sweeney grew up as a happy threesome in the idyllic seaside town of Southport, Connecticut. But their mother's death from cancer fifteen years ago tarnished their golden-hued memories, and the sisters drifted apart. Their one touchstone is their father, Bill Sweeney, an internationally famous literary lion and college professor universally adored by critics, publishers, and book lovers. When Bill dies unexpectedly one June night, his daughters return to their childhood home. They aren't sure what the future holds without their larger-than-life father, but they do know how to throw an Irish wake to honor a man of his stature. But as guests pay their respects and reminisce, one stranger, emboldened by whiskey, has crashed the party. It turns out that she too is a Sweeney sister. What does this mean for William's literary legacy? Where is the unfinished memoir he's stashed away? And how will a fourth Sweeney sister, a blond among redheads, fit into their story?"--Provided by publisher.

i have nothing in common with these WASP-y privileged sisters living in connecticut, yet i was charmed by this story.

William Sweeney, an alcoholic, profligate and noted author, dies suddenly. His daughters, who have always worked as a unit but known one another's every fault, are thrust into preparing for his funeral, protecting his literary legacy, and finding the memoir he wrote (and hid) before the publisher wants its advance back. Which is gone. There is not a lot of money, just a shabby old house. Dealing with their grief at his passing, remembering their mother, long dead, and evaluating their own messy lives, they find out there is a fourth Sweeney sister, tangible evidence of his betrayal of their beloved mother. Serena Tucker, who lived next door, of all things.

The sisters try to figure out how to be four Sweeney sisters as they face crossroads in all of their individual lives. The ending is very satisfying, although I just wanted to slap Bill.

One of my favorites was Serena's father, not Bill, but the one who raised her. Some potential new partners for the original three are also interesting.
