Dave Eggers' writing style is rhythmic and unconventional, almost like listening to jazz as if it were the written word. His talent is evident, and the back-and-forth musicality of the dialogue was a marvel to follow along with, but the narrative ceased to interest me after a while.

I read somewhere that A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius makes more sense in the pre-selfie culture. Seems accurate. I can see where this story comes across as excessively self-indulgent given that our online world today is inundated with an ocean of amateur "look at me" tales.

I felt like this book flew by, despite being 12 CDs worth of content (including the Preface, which oddly enough is disc #12, but still worth a listen.) The writing is honest, bold, panicked, chill, hilarious, stream-of-consciousness, and narrator Dion Graham totally nails the voice and personality of the author perfectly, making for a delightful audiobook.
