This book reads like a promising first draft. It's got great elements that could've made a fascinating and engaging story (which were what drove me to finish the book), but is then bogged down by useless and unnecessary romance. I mean, the protagonist FALLS IN LOVE WITH A STRANGER WHO KIDNAPS HER- almost immediately! It's asinine. And there is far, far too much telling and not showing. Don't TELL me she's changed her mind about things; show me. The author seemed to never learn that very key writing lesson.
Not bad if you're looking for something mindless, if not sometimes infuriatingly badly written.

I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. A rich earth centered fantasy world with well developed characters and unexpected plot turns. A beautifully written story; it's really just lovely to read. 'Mo cri, mo tire, mo fiel.' <3

This book just kept calling me. When I would have to put it down, then I was always thinking ahead to when I could read it some more. Elanna's journey from what she had been taught by her captors to what her family stood for was compelling. I enjoyed her connection with Jahan and how it helped her understand her own magic.

This debut fantasy has it all - earth magic, romance, and revolution. Highly recommended for those who loved Johansen's Queen of Tearling trilogy or Carson's Girl of Fire and Thorns series.

I really enjoyed this book, this was one I struggled to put down. Ellana starts out with a very narrow minded view of the world and through her journey learns to embrace the truth of what is really happening between the countries. Who is really loyal to the cause, who is a double agent, and who is plotting for their own gain. The intrigue kept me reading but my love for lady Ellana's beautiful gift to wake the land and what she can do with the land was fun and imaginative. I seriously cannot wait for the next installment in the series.
