Scary and spooky are not my jam, so this book was not my favorite of the 2019-20 Mark Twain nominees. Our heroine (Tessa) has just moved to Chicago with her family and finds her new house seems to be haunted by a ghost only she and her brother's creepy ventriloquist dummy are aware of. The ghost mystery is satisfactorily solved by Tessa and her new friends with a little science to explain some of the occurrences. The line parents draw on exposure to the paranormal varies by family. This title may not be an option for some middle graders. I will hesitate to recommend this title to young middle grade students despite the themes that shine through on adjusting to new environments and making friends.

As scary chapter books go, this one has a lot to offer. There's a haunted house, a creepy ventriloquist's doll, and a vanishing cemetery statue! This is a solid story for kids who like spooky books, but it is also about moving to a new place, making new friends, and learning the history of wherever you live. A well-rounded read!

A creepy ghost story for kids in addition to an engaging mystery. Tessa's parents are moving the family from Florida to Chicago and Tessa is not happy that she has to leave behind everything that she knows including her best friend. Once they arrive at their new home in Chicago, strange things start happening and Tessa is determined to find out what is going on. Fair warning that if you don't like creepy dolls, steer clear of this book!
