From the author of the New York Times-bestselling and Edgar Award-winning The Expats
As dawn approaches in New York, literary agent Isabel Reed is turning the final pages of a mysterious, anonymous manuscript, racing through the explosive revelations about powerful people, as well as long-hidden secrets about her own past. In Copenhagen, veteran CIA operative Hayden Gray, determined that this sweeping story be buried, is suddenly staring down the barrel of an unexpected gun. And in Zurich, the author himself is hiding in a shadowy expat life, trying to atone for a lifetime&;s worth of lies and betrayals with publication of The Accident, while always looking over his shoulder.

Over the course of one long, desperate, increasingly perilous day, these lives collide as the book begins its dangerous march toward publication, toward saving or ruining careers and companies, placing everything at risk&;and everyone in mortal peril.  The rich cast of characters&;in publishing and film, politics and espionage&;are all forced to confront the consequences of their ambitions, the schisms between their ideal selves and the people they actually became.

The action rockets around Europe and across America, with an intricate web of duplicities stretching back a quarter-century to a dark winding road in upstate New York, where the shocking truth about the accident itself is buried.

Gripping, sophisticated, layered, and impossible to put down, The Accident proves once again that Chris Pavone is a true master of suspense.

First chapters good; pulling me into the story. Can't put down. Towards the end of "The Accident" bodies start to fall.

This novel takes place in the 24 hours after a manuscript with an anonymous author is dropped off at a literary agent’s office. The manuscript contains allegations against a powerful media mogul. As the story progresses, every character with a copy of the manuscript is in danger. The story drags at points, and entire chapters are devoted to the backgrounds of minor characters. As is Pavone’s style, there are numerous twists and revelations throughout the book. While not directly a sequel, there are characters from The Expats that appear in The Accident.

Arguably the best part of The Accident is that the book is filled with satirically sharp observations about the publishing world, capturing the coltish energy of entry-level new hires and the cattiness and desperation of older cohorts. Overall, The Accident hits all the genre pleasure points. It’s a thriller that enjoys skewering many of the tropes and caprices of the publishing and media world. For a beach read, it’s not bad, but with some closer critical scrutiny, its twists and turns can feel belabored and forced. I felt like the parts where I should have been yelping with anticipation I just meh-ed.

not my favorite--had 1/2 a surprize at the end but that only brought questions---wouldn't the end take away the problem in the 1st place?

A really bland novel, with the author attempting to be clever by half, but fails miserably. There has to be some justification, some hook to the cleverness, not simply being clever in and of itself, while not improving on the blandness of this book. A trivial novel compared to the news stories of the day. [If you need a book to read to kill the time, this might be the one, but if you are looking for entertaining fiction, I would pass.]

Great follow up to The Expats. Unique writing style that keeps the reader fully engaged.

When an anonymous manuscript is delivered to literary agent Isabel Reed she reads it through and realizes it could be a huge money maker but the info in it, if true is very dangerous. Unauthorized copies end up in the hands of others and those others start turning up dead. Afraid she'll be next Isabel goes on the run trying to stay one step ahead of whoever is trying to stop the manuscript's publication. This book was ok but I had some problems with it. It jumps around a lot (in time and space) and has a lot of characters so it was hard to keep track of what was going on. There are also many twists and turns in plot and that added to the confusion.

An anonymous manuscript is delivered to literary agent Isabel Reed. It contains an explosive tell all about a well known media mogul. The more people read it, however they acquire it, the more likely they are to end up dead. This novel takes place over the course of one day as Isabel tries to stay one step ahead of CIA operative Hayden Gray, who seeks to destroy the manuscript and all knowledge of it. Meanwhile our anonymous, cancer ridden author is anxiously awaiting for the shoe to drop in hiding in Zurich.

Quite honestly, I managed to figure out the ending quite early so that was a bit of a draw back for me. There is a great deal of espionage and conspiracy here to delight most thriller fans. For a face paced story taking place in one day, however, I found myself constantly looking to see how many pages I had left to get through. That being said I did very much want to see whether this manuscript, and its writer and readers, would live to the last page.

Great plot with many secrets, gradually revealed up until the very end, and compelling characters. With all its twists and turns, truly suspenseful.

"Isabel Reed is a New York literary agent who's just received an anonymous manuscript that -- if published -- promises to make a lot of money, but will also destroy the career of a very powerful man. This man would do anything to keep the secret that's exposed in the manuscript, and though Isabel is careful, she's not quite careful enough. As copies of the manuscript start to get out, Isabel and quite a few others find themselves in mortal danger. The "suspense is palpable" (Publishers Weekly) but where author Chris Pavone really shines is in the backstories of his characters. And though The Accident stands alone, fans of his 2012 debut (The Expats) will enjoy seeing some familiar faces pop up here." Thrillers and Suspense April 2014 newsletter.
