While not as engaging as some of her previous short story collections, Lovely, Dark, Deep is still classic Oates in that both the prose and content is haunting and filled with rushing emotion. Unfortunately, as with a lot of Oates, some of the stories do not feel altogether finished, but more like a first draft version.

While the prose is nice, almost all the stories have no plot, or open questions that never get closed. Tried to read 7 of the stories before I realised I was wasting my time.
