Gifted with incredible powers, the young healer is about to embark on her first mission, visiting suffering cities in the far reaches of the war-scarred realm. But the airship on which she is traveling is plagued by a series of strange and disturbing occurrences, including murder, and Octavia herself is threatened. Suddenly, she is caught up in a flurry of intrigue: the dashingly attractive steward may be one of the infamous Clockwork Daggers--the Queen's spies and assassins--and her cabin-mate harbors disturbing secrets. This was a quick read.... Because the world grabbed me!
The heroine was great, the setting was familiar but fresh, and the "magic" is an interesting and thoughtful idea.
I am very glad I read this, no super sappy romance (there is flirtation but, they aren't saying devoted I love you's by the end)
Ordered the second.

This isn't a steampunk novel, so much as a novel with steampunk set pieces. The author seems to hint at a magic/science conflict, but doesn't deliver much past the main character constantly looking at people who don't believe in her mythical, saint-figure with hurt, doe eyes. This book is anti-science and full of blatant religious overtones, which has a readership but typically not a steampunk one.

Great plot that just gallops along with lots of twists. Wonderful world-building and very good storytelling. Great fun read.

The worldbuilding is interesting in this steampunk romp, but the character development is a bit uneven, with a main character who is so implausibly talented that it gets annoying at times. Still, it's the beginning of a series I would at least give one more book to get better, if only to see more of the world only hinted at in this volume.
