I’m an adult reader of TP and enjoy her stories, letting all her books stand as is. This book was a little different and for me s little slow to start with but I think because it has more inter-dialogue with animals and less action. Gr8 for us animal lovers. Later on I loved the inner workings of Daine’s Wild Magic with specific animals and Immortals. Real cool. But what about Daine’s dream of her Ma and the horned man? I thought Tait would share some meaning, or is the revelation saved for a later book?

A well written fantasy adventure in a world full of strange magical beasts and powerful foes. A pagan ethos in relating to magic, animals, and nature. I valued its emphasis on integrity and respect for all creatures. I enjoyed the good hearted banter between the characters as well as the bravery and friendship they showed for each other.

Okay, I believe this is the weakest of the series so far -- but I was warned of that so I'm okay with it. I liked how Daine's powers evolved and how she was on her own and had to construct her own team and her own family instead of being adopted into on like in the first book. But the plot was a little dull and drawn out and the climax was nonexistent. I am still going to continue reading, if for nothing else but that I love this world and want to see how this impending war is going to turn out.

Riveting. I've read this book (and every other book in the Tortall Saga) several times. Each times I discover something new. Most recently (thanks to my friend who has just finished her master's thesis partly about this book) my attention was turned to the feminist and eco-critical aspects of the story.

The Immortals #2

I want to say I enjoyed Wolf-speaker but I can't because I really didn't. The story was boring; it was an isolated event and restricted to a single location with Daine accompanied by furries. However, there is further exploration of her wild-magic that she used to rally all sorts of animals for her cause, so that was good. And the writing is still enjoyably different from current books. I'm also glad that there is no lingering, page(s)-filled anatomical descriptions of characters, hot or not.
