"It's called 'The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All.' A howling void of blackness, I imagine."
I only recently heard of Laird Barron, which is one of the most perfect horror writer names ever. I agree that if you didn't know, you'd think he had written these decades ago, as it has a similar atmosphere to old, weird masters like Lovecraft, Poe, and Machen. Like Lovecraft, his work can be classified as cosmic horror, but he's a less sloppy writer than Lovecraft and, of course, less racist. Fans of the above-mentioned authors will enjoy these stories, which continues their legacy into the 21st century. Cthulhu gives it 2 tentacles up.

If I didn't know better I would have placed Mr. Barron as living in the late 1800s. His prose style is very old fashioned and his language is veddy veddy British and old fashioned. Some of these stories are verbose and are dragged out far too long - so much so that is skipped pages to get to the end. In smaller doses, I would have had barrels of praise for the style but an entire collection was too much. Well worth the time to read but in smaller doses.

A great collection of consistently uncanny stories. Somewhat in the vein of Lovecraft, with with a modern sensibility.
