Coming-of-age novel of two teenage boys who become fast friends in spite of their damaging families. Mark Slouka is adept at crafting the spare, real-life teen conversation between the boys and painting a vivid picture of the late 1960’s in America. Spoiler alert: Tearjerker.

Recommended by a library patron. A coming-of-age story and a story of domestic abuse that is beautifully written. Great characters. A favorite in 2013.

"In 1968, in the blue-collar town of Brewster, New York, 16-year-old Jon Mosher has an unhappy, loveless home life. On the other side of the tracks is rebellious, sensitive Ray, who lives with his sadistic, alcoholic father and claims his black eyes and bruises come from paid street fights. The two become friends, fall in love with the same girl (Karen, who picks Ray), and talk about escaping claustrophobic Brewster. A powerful story of teens whose friends are closer than family, Brewster is told by Jon as an adult, remembering a town that seemed perpetually stuck in dreary mid-winter."
