Anya could really use a friend. But her new BFF isn't kidding about the "Forever" part . . .
Of all the things Anya expected to find at the bottom of an old well, a new friend was not one of them. Especially not a new friend who's been dead for a century.
Falling down a well is bad enough, but Anya's normal life might actually be worse. She's embarrassed by her family, self-conscious about her body, and she's pretty much given up on fitting in at school. A new friend—even a ghost—is just what she needs.
Or so she thinks.
Spooky, sardonic, and secretly sincere, Anya's Ghost is a wonderfully entertaining debut graphic novel from author/artist Vera Brosgol.

This book starts of innocently enough and ramps up quickly! Warning: There is mention of murder, smoking, underage drinking and sex.

I like the book it was creepy and ok, but l don't like the "oh my God business" and I'm a Christian and yikes, bad words= not cool. And plus, smoking is not good.

I love the graphic novel/comic book medium, but all books in this medium suffer the same problem: they aren't long enough. This fault is definitely true of "Anya's Ghost," which, because of its short length and quick pace, lacks in depth and development. Unfortunately, just about the time the story gets interesting, the book wraps itself up and ends.

That said, there is a turn in the narrative mid-way through the book and I never saw it coming. I just wish more had been done with it. In my opinion, the book ends just as it gets most interesting, which is really frustrating. Overall, I think the book has some good stuff to say about being a teenage kid. The message is overall pretty positive, which I like.

I will definitely seek out more by the author though. The art is pretty terrific.

High school, body image, fitting into American culture as an immigrant - Anya is dealing with many growing pains. When she meets a ghost girl she has a new friend - but is there something more sinister behind this bizarre occurrence? Quirky, fun read for teens and adults.

A debut graphic novel that hits all the right notes to create a spooky tale that also conveys the immigrant experience of a young adult.

This graphic novel really surprised me. I went in not knowing much about the story or the author (actually it was recommended by a booktuber named Zoe)- it sounded interesting so I thought I would order it from the library. It was pretty amazing and I highly recommend it. I loved the art style and the flow of the story. The main character was a believable high school girl, different and trying to fit in. I loved how she came from Russia, and she had a normal body type- she wasn't just a rail thin white girl that everyone automatically fell in love with. It made the story more tangible, and it felt different than anything else that I've read. The ghost story was intriguing and the way Anya dealt with the ghost was interesting as well. The twist got me for sure- I won't give it away here, but it was handled nicely and ended appropriately- it had a bit of Supernatural (the TV show) flair to it. If you're looking for a quick, engaging paranormal graphic novel, this is definitely what you should pick up.

I really enjoyed this book, it was a quick read that sucked me in. I was a bit disappointed when I reached the end because I wanted more. Teen angst, mystery, young love (or misguided crushes), ghosts, and drama all rolled into one magnificent read. The writing and illustrations worked well together in this graphic novel, the muted colors giving an impression of gloom. The plot keeps the reader engaged and though the basic plot has been done before the author keeps it fresh with a new twist.

Developing your own identity and being comfortable within your own skin is the main theme I pulled from this book, but bullying, underage smoking, lying, and cheating are also themes and lessons that can be addressed with this book.

Read-a-likes for this book include: Page by Paige by Laura Gulledge, Ghostopolis by Doug TenNapel, and Americus by Jonathan Reed.

This was an amazing book! The art is very simple but visually pleasing. The artist is wonderful at making each character unique and also communicating the emotions of the characters through body language. The plot itself was fantastic. The high school that Anya goes to is a lot like actual high schools and fairly free of the tired tropes of most high school stories. There is a hot bad boy and a 'popular girl', but the clichés are twisted around so much that it's not annoying. No happy romance story here, which is refreshing to me. At first, Emily just seems like a sweet little sidekick, and Sean seems like the perfect love interest, but then the story takes a sharp turn in the opposite directions. I found this looking for a book that would scare me. While it didn't, it was quite creepy and thrilling! I totally recommend the book!
There are some sexual comments, I'll post a notice about that later.

Just real quick:
This book is fantastic - great storytelling, you learn a little something about yourself, and it has exposure to a culture that isn't commonly covered.
My only criticism is that it's for a younger audience than me. :-)
