Grieving over the murder of his family, private detective Charlie "Bird" Parker returns to Maine in search of refuge, only to become caught up in the brutal murders of a young mother and her child, a crime that could be linked to the troubled history of Parker's own grandfather and to a legacy of evil that has haunted the region for years. 60,000 first printing.

“Connolly has crafted one of the most darkly intriguing books this reviewer has encountered in more than three decades of reading crime fiction.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

The second thriller in John Connolly's bestselling, chilling series featuring haunted private investigator Charlie Parker.

Charlier Parker, a former New York City detective with a haunted past, befriends a down-and-out mother with a small child. When she turns up dead, Charlie's first suspect is her estranged husband. Charlie follows the man's trail to Maine and there he becomes entangled in a series of strange occurances which all seem to harken back to a string of unsolved murders that took place generations before. The murders were never solved and now Charlie must hunt for a killer and the connection between two crimes that span a century.

Connolly's first Charlie Parker book was great. This, his second, only a little less intense but well worth a read. I am now waiting for the third, e-version of The Killing Kind, and have already skipped ahead and finished 5 of his other novels. So nice to find a writer that does not disappoint or start phoning it in. His care with story and character is evident and the intersection of detective, suspense, horror and supernatural genres handled with aplomb..

A relentless drumbeat of dread as detective Charlie "Bird" Parker faces several sinister characters in bloody confrontation in rural frigid Maine. Dark Hollow was a surprise for me and is now on my list of my top five detective novels. Connolly writes with just a touch of Steven King. I am looking forward to reading his next book... with my lights on.
