Juan Carlo, born 5 January 1938, was the King of Spain. Spanish dictator Francisco Franco named Juan Carlos as the next head of state in 1969. Soon after enthronement, Juan Carlos introduced reforms to dismantle the Francoist regime and begin the Spanish transition to democracy. This led to the approval of the Spanish Constitution of 1978 in a referendum, which established a constitutional monarchy. Juan Carlos also played a major role in stopping the 1981 coup attempt. In 2008, he was considered the most popular leader in all Ibero-America. On 2 June 2014, Juan Carlos announced that he would abdicate in favour of his son, Felipe.
