This is a book of small and large digressions that lead the reader onto a myriad of interesting historical paths. It is part pedantry, part poetry, part revelation. It shows how food, and the quest for food--especially grain--has molded the history of people and of nations. The author was an obvious polymath, who wrote well. Its tale ends right after WW2. By the time one finishes, there is the sense of having been in contact with an extremely observant, erudite friend.
