It is the Spring of 1812. The fortification that is Badajoz, heavily defended by monstrous fortifications and a huge French-Spanish army, lies astride the Spanish Portuguese border must be taken by the English if they are to have a chance to defeat the emperor's forces in Iberia. Sharpe, stripped of his rank, must go through the breach to redeem himself and to regain his Captaincy.
As usual in a Cornwell novel, the action is hot and furious and in the grand finale, each page virtually drips with blood and gore --- this is indeed, vintage Bernard Cornwell..
