"...The third novel in the Horsemen Trilogy, in which a proper lady discovers just how desirable she really is after one very improper night... Sophia Armitage does not consider herself attractive. Even her late husband treated her more as a companion than a lover when she accompanied him to war. But Sophia hopes to enjoy a Season in London as her niece makes her social debut until, that is, her hopes are dashed when she is faced with a threat she can reveal to no one. Then she meets Sir Nathaniel Gascoigne, an old army friend, and falls in love with him even as she must discourage his growing passion for her. Nathaniel can sense Sophia's unhappiness and fear, but does not understand that his attempts to protect and help her can only bring about her downfall"

When I picked up this book, I had wondered if it was one I’d already read. The author was familiar, but the title didn’t seem so. After reading about 20 pages, I realized why I hadn’t read this book or any of Mary Balogh’s others. Her writing is very difficult to understand. Perhaps she uses colloquialisms or speech that is familiar to her native country. I read and then would re-read and read even a third time several of the paragraphs to try and understand to whom she was referring. Honestly, if I have to re-read the paragraph even once, it’s not worth the time.
Sorry, to all fans of her writing. She’s just not my cup of tea.

Balogh is one of the absolute best romance writers because her characters are complex and real. This is my favorite--but all the others I have read have been very good--I just wish my local libraries had more of her books available, in more forms. She makes her characters real, and therefore really interesting. And she knows the rules of the time, unlike some other authors in the genre.
