A movie to watch on BLACK HISTORY month. educational.

This movie, BIRTH OF A NATION, is based on a real-life slave. It tells the story about the slave, Nat Turner, who gathered other slaves and began an uprising for freedom in 1831, in the state of Virginia. Nat's Turner's wife, Cherry, was raped by slave-catchers, and in a weird twist of fate, Nat Turner was portrayed by actor and director, Nate Parker, who was, accused of rape (during his college years), which re-surfaced with the release of this movie.

I remember this film being highly anticipated before the release and wanting to go out and see it in theaters. I didn't think the film was as good as the hype. I have read and watched a lot of film about slavery and Nat Turner, I don't think this film did the truth justice. I felt the film was only surface-level content of the real story. The acting was just "ok" for me compared to other movies I've seen. I felt the actresses of the film were much more compelling to watch and I wanted to see more of them instead.

It wasn't a bad movie, but it's not on par with movies like The Color Purple, Selma, or 12 Years a Slave not because it didn't have a big budget.

Difficult to watch. Mostly engrossing; convincing performances throughout. Everyone should see.

Yes the story is powerful and moving, but the star and director of the show is a rapist in real life. I couldn't get past that while watching the movie. He put a rape scene in the moving, knowing he did that to someone in real life. I am giving 4 stars for the others, Nate Parker is a zero.

and like someone else wrote.... this movie had so much potential! It was the highest bought movie in Sundance history and it could have been an Oscar darling, but horrendous behavior by the director/star of the movie ruined everything for those involved in the production.

A very GOOD movie.

A seriously damaged and inadequate movie ... its defects reveal traits of character-arrogance, vanity, and self-importance-that exert an unfortunately strong influence on Parker's directorial choices.

A stereotypical view.

A pretentious and poorly made biopic, The Birth of a Nation lacks passion and focus.
