Set in 1955 Mississippi, after the beating death of Emmett Till, Rose Lee Carter has to decide whether to stay in her family home, with her bullying grandmother, kind and gentle grandfather, older cousin Queen (who acts like one, despite being pregnant and not married and only 16), and her reluctant-to-talk younger brother Fred Lee, or flee to Chicago to live with an Aunt.

This was a moving read, thought-provoking and highly recommended.

This is a fabulous book about the civil rights movement that will stay with you long after you're done! Rose is one of the best characters I've read, maybe, ever. While it's written for young people, I think adults will find it engaging and eye-opening as well. It felt especially timely as the civil rights discussion continues today.

This book will teach you more about the civil rights movement than any history text book. Not about the historical events but about the lives of African Americans in Mississippi. I appreciate more the courage needed to question the system, protest, register to vote... and the many reasons people were pushed to find that courage.
Rose/Rosa is a fabulous character. I loved watching her grow and develop more strength. It would be wonderful for the author to write a book featuring an adult Rosa.
