Daniel Cumberland was born free in the north, but was deceived, captured and sold into slavery. Though a traumatized and broken man, after regaining his freedom he joins the Loyal League, a spy organization whose members infiltrate and report on happenings in the south during the time of the Civil War. He is partnered with Janeta, a young woman of Cuban origin whose mother had been enslaved, and who is hiding her own secrets. This is the third volume in Cole's Loyal League series, but for me it didn't quite measure up to the first two (An Extraordinary Union being my favorite). It is always a treat to read about this time period, especially from voices not traditionally represented in the romance genre, and Cole's writing is quite lovely.
