Edge of Your Seat
the 100 Greatest Movie Thrillers
October, more specifically the Halloween season, is a great time to celebrate horror movies and what scares us. Each generation has their own unique society-based fears, and horror movies have a deep history of reflecting them. Several books and documentaries can be found in the library that discuss the horror film genre and its evolution over time. Film critics have often considered horror movies as one of the lowest forms of cinema. Yet, for audiences, the horror genre is one of the most popular and endearing forms of entertainment. What it comes down to is that people like to be scared. Horror movies are associated with blood, gore, and violence. It seems like horror movies often reflect what is happening in society as opposed to being something that has influenced society. The monsters on the screen were manifestations of what the people in those times were experiencing and fearing in their daily lives. War, the Great Depression, the sexual revolution, and other shifts in society have influenced horror movies, and each era of the horror genre seems to have its own personification, or monsterification, of the fears society provides for us. Essentially, this list explores how the definition of what scares us has changed and how culture and society influenced it. #indypladults
