Take a Wander With Me Under My Big Umbrella

Sometimes it's nice to fully embrace the rain, to allow it to run over you with your face to the sky...and other times it sure is nice to have an umbrella. The children in some of these picture books like to do both, but somewhere among the pages, you'll always find an umbrella or two. #IndyPLKids #spring #rain #umbrella

  • I immediately loved this book when I first read it years ago and I discovered that I love it even more upon rereading it. Part of the Kirkus Review says, “A subtle, deceptively simple book about inclusion, hospitality, and welcoming the ‘other’” and…

  • "I sing a little rain song, a simple song, a plain song, a pitter-patter-tip-tap-on-the-windowpane song. Drip drop, plip plop, pit pat, split splat!" This is one of my very favorite rain books and I've used it in storytimes multiple times. I read it…

  • This book has a whole lot of umbrellas, but sometimes even those are not enough, so it's best to "congregate" under shelter to wait out the storm, "The storm above makes friends of strangers. We laugh under cover at thunder and danger." The whole…

  • A lovely book about mindfulness, being tuned into the world around you, and thanking the rain. I love that the dad joins in the dancing and splashing and, also, that it was his idea to take a walk in the rain in the first place. Only available as…

  • So, in this book, there is definitely an umbrella, but after a brief introduction, it is used in some very unconventional ways. Some animals come across it and use it as a bed, a perch, and a boat. This has a very similar format and story to Brett's…

  • A cute story about breaking from tradition and following your heart. Our lead, Noot, is from a village that makes umbrellas, all sorts of umbrellas (big and small, from silk and from paper), but the village always paints the same things on them,…

  • There may be an umbrella in this book, but a grumpy bear and hula hoops are the real stars (okay, the moose nearly steals the show, too). If you and your little one like a kind of deadpan, dry humor, then this would be a good fit. Toddlers probably…

  • A cute story about inviting others in and making room for them (which is admittedly easier to do if you have a magic umbrella). The premise of this is very similar to The Big Umbrella by Amy June Bates but I do like how in this story the neighbors…

  • An adorable book about the pleasures of a rainy day, both outside and inside. Stomp in puddles, race boats in a curbside river, watch raindrops drip from spot to spot as they race for the ground, make blanket forts, nap, and read. Also available as…

  • A beautiful, whimsical wordless picture book about a dog, an umbrella, and an adventure around the world. There's only one copy of this left in the system, but it was too pretty not to include and, in a way, the umbrella is the hero of the story.

  • When it begins to rain a young child explores outside and asks the question "Who likes rain?" It's not the cat or Papa's old truck, but there are a few creatures that do!

  • Okay, okay, umbrellas are not a big part of this book, but one of the caregivers does use one, and it was too cute not to include. This is an adorable book about...puddling! Three friends don't shun the rain but, instead, delight in it. I like that…

  • A small child explores their yard looking for their kitty cat. They see what creatures like the rain as they go along and which ones like to hide away until it ends.
